Adolfas Ramanauskas (Vanagas)
(March 6, 1918 / New Britain, Connecticut – November 29, 1957 / Vilnius) was one of the prominent leaders of the Lithuanian guerillas.
Ramanauskas was born to Lithuanian immigrant family in the United States. In 1921, his family returned to Lithuania, bought 6 hectares (15 acres) of land and took up farming.
Ramanauskas graduated from Galiniai primary school in 1930, and from Lazdijai secondary school in 1937. He continued his studies at the Klaipėda Pedagogical Institute (now Vilnius Pedagogical University). Just before graduation the Klaipėda Region (Memel Territory) was ceded to Nazi Germany; therefore the institute was evacuated to Panevėžys. The same year, Ramanauskas enrolled into the Kaunas War School. He graduated with the rank of second lieutenant . After graduation Ramanauskas moved to Krivonys near Druskininkai where he became a teacher. Ramanauskas worked as a teacher when Lithuania was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1944–45.He participated in the anti-Soviet June Uprising at the start of the 1941 German invasion of Russia. In spring 1945, Ramanauskas joined anti-Soviet resistance, advancing from a platoon commander to the chairman of the Union of Lithuanian Freedom Fighters. After 1952, due to heavy losses Ramanauskas officially ordered cessation of armed struggle in favor of passive resistance.
He was the last partisan commander to be captured. Betrayed, he was arrested and tortured. On October 12, barely alive, he was transferred to a hospital, where doctors noted his multiple wounds – punctured eye, missing testicles, bruised stomach, etc...

Ramanauskas was sentenced to death on September 25, 1957, and executed on November 29, 1957. The place of his burial is unknown. His wife Birutė Mažeikaitė was sentenced to 8 years in Gulag.. After Lithuania regained independence in 1990, Ramanauskas was posthumously awarded the Order of the Cross of Vytis and promoted to Brigadier General.

Адольфас Раманаускас( Ванагас / сокол) - Начальник штаба "Армии Свободы Литвы" в период советской оккупации.
В 1940 - 1957 гг. - один из лидеров антисоветского партизанского движения сопротивления в Литве. Окончил военное училище в Каунасе. Лейтенант Литовской армии. Перед советским вторжением работал школьным учителем.
С началом советской оккупации снят с должности. Организовал подпольную боевую организацию.
С 25.04.1945 года командир партизанского отряда в округе Нямунайчо, затем командир батальона в Меркине (Дзукийская группа).
В августе 1947 – сентябре 1948 возглавлял партизанский округ "Дайнава" в Южной Литве.
С 1949 - первый заместитель председателя ЛЛКС (LLKS), главнокомандующий вооруженными силами ЛЛКС в Южной Литве.
Один из организаторов и редакторов партизанской печати: газеты движения сопротивления "Третий звонок", в 1946-47 редактировал газету"Люби Родину" антисоветского освободительного партизанского штаба в Меркине; в 1945-1952 редактор и издатель газеты "Лайсвес варпас" и ряда других.
Выслежен с помощью предателя и арестован советскими спецслужбами в Каунасе в 12.10.1956 г.
Пребывал под советским следствием в Вильнюсе, в ходе которого подвергался изуверским пыткам.
25.09.1957 советским судом приговорен к смертной казни за антинародную деятельность в Литве.
Приговор приведен в исполнение 29.11.1957.
P.S. В 1994 одной из школ г. Алитуса присвоено имя Адольфаса Раманаускаса.
В 1997 посмертно получил статус воина-добровольца.
В 1998 награжден орденом (крестом) Витиса 2-й степени посмертно.
В 1999 – награжден орденом (крестом) Витиса 1-й степени посмертно.
